The Grotowski Institute

The Grotowski Institute

The Grotowski Institute is an institution which combines artistic and research projects that correspond to the challenges laid down by Jerzy Grotowski’s creative practice.

The Grotowski Institute was established on the base of the Centre for Study of Jerzy Grotowski’s Work and for Cultural and Theatrical Research, which existed from 1989, and operates from the former Laboratory Theatre premises located in Wroclaw’s Old Market Square and from the forest base of Brzezinka. The change of the name and the statute, which took place on the 28th of December 2006, marks a realignment, expansion and development of the institution’s programmes. The Grotowski Institute continues the lines of work run by the Grotowski Centre and puts more emphasis on education, promotion, producing, and publishing.

The educational dimension of the Grotowski Institute includes: conferences, film projections with introductions, guest lectures, and work sessions. In 2008 these activities culminate during Atelier Suspension of Expression (1–27 of July) consisting of series of practical and theoretical work sessions addressed to actors, musicians, singers, dancers, and theatre people.

In 2007–2009, the Grotowski Institute promotes artistic and research projects by Maisternia Pisni from Lviv (Ukraine) and Theatre ZAR from Wroclaw (Poland).

The publishing projects focus on the work of Jerzy Grotowski and the achievements of remarkable representatives of the contemporary theatre within two editorial programmes: Grotowski: Problems and Tasks, and The Path of Theatre and Culture.

The Grotowski Institute, through the support of the City of Wroclaw, acts as the fundamental partner and coordinating agent in the frame of Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards’ project Horizons (2007–2009). Through its support of Horizons, the Grotowski Institute provides a meeting point in Poland with Workcenter by periodically hosting the ongoing Workcenter research led by its Artistic Director, Thomas Richards.

The Grotowski Institute acquired a new space at 30/32 Na Grobli in Wroclaw for the fulfillment of its extended activities and for the collaboration with Workcenter in its project Horizons. This new place will be renovated in 2008–2009.

The Grotowski Institute on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of establishing The Laboratory Theatre of Jerzy Grotowski is organising the programme of The Grotowski Year 2009 including exhibitions, conferences, practical seminars, theatre meetings, and publications.

The new English website of the Grotowski Institute (www.grotowski-institute.art.pl) is under construction which should be completed by mid-2008. We apologize for inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.
